Question #86470

What is meant by standards with reference to different pollutants? Describe how the standards for different pollutants are set.

Expert's answer

Each pollutant is comparatively safe up until a certain critical level. From a certain level of concentration in the environment it harms the recipient. This critical concentration is considered to be a standard of its content in the environment. For safety reasons it is supposed not to be exceeded.

The standards for different pollutants are set by using testing (bioindication), experimentation and observation.
