A bonding pair of electrons are a pair that participate in a covalent bond with another atom.
Each covalent bond requires at least two (4 or 6 if a double or triple bond) electrons which are shared by the two atoms participating in the bond.
A lone pair of electrons are valence electrons attached to an atom that do not participate in a covalent bond. However, they do affect the molecule's shape and other chemical properties.
