Red blood cells are the 'centre stage' for the asexual development of the malaria parasite.
Within the red cells, repeated cycles of parasitic development occur with precise periodicity, and at the end of each cycle, hundreds of fresh daughter parasites are released that invade more number of red cells (figure 1).
