Question #59134

which substance contains both ionic and covalent bonds?explain your choice

predict four physical properties of this substance... explain your answer

Expert's answer

Some compounds contain both ionic and covalent bonds. These compounds contain polyatomic ions. Many of these compounds contain a metal, a nonmetal and also hydrogen. However, other examples contain a metal joined via an ionic bond to covalently bonded nonmetals. Here are examples of compounds that exhibit both types of chemical bonding: NaNO3, (NH4)S, Ba(CN)2, CaCO3, NH4Cl.
Some of the physical properties can be indicated from NH4Cl example: it is a white powder; its taste is salty; it has no odor; it doesnt melt, but does sublime; and it is easily dissolvable in water, but insoluble in acetone.
