Answer on Question #50408, Chemistry, Other

Why add isoamylalcohol in determination of chloride in crude oil? IP-77 Test method.

Solution:

This method is intended for the determination of total halide concentration of 0.002 to 0.02% wt, in crude petroleum, topped crude, residual cracking stock, and fuel oil.

This method is based on successive extractions of salts from crude oil with hot water, followed by voltammetric titration of the aqueous extract. While stirring the oil with water gives an emulsion. The isoamylalcohol is used as the demulsifier, to separate oil and aqueous fractions.
