Question:

why is preparation of sulphuric acid called contact process?

Answer:

The stage of oxidation of SO2\mathrm{SO}_2 is carried out at 400500C400 - 500^{\circ}\mathrm{C} in contact tower where V2O5\mathrm{V}_2\mathrm{O}_5 is filled in different pipes. SO2\mathrm{SO}_2 here contacts with the catalyst and reacts with air (O2)(\mathrm{O}_2) to produce SO3\mathrm{SO}_3. Under above conditions 98%98\% SO2\mathrm{SO}_2 is converted into SO3\mathrm{SO}_3.

2SO2+O22SO3+45kcal2 \mathrm{SO}_2 + \mathrm{O}_2 \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{SO}_3 + 45 \mathrm{kcal}

Vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5)(\mathrm{V}_2\mathrm{O}_5) catalyst is used to increase rate of reaction.
