Calculate the saponification value of a fat which consumed 9ml of KOH during titration?
Saponification value or saponification number (SV or SN) represents the number of milligrams of potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH) required to saponify one gram of fat under the conditions specified.
Given the concentration of KOH is CM = 1 M, the saponification value of fat in the above example is:
CM = n / V
n (KOH) = CM x V = 1 x 0.09 = 0.09 mol
n = m / M
M (KOH) = 56.1 g/mol
m (KOH) = n x M = 0.09 x 56.1 = 5.1
SV = 5.1
