Question #211252

Atomic and ionic radii of the elements of group 16 are smaller than those of the corresponding elements of group 15 and increases down the group. Why?

Expert's answer

The atomic radius of group-16 elements or oxygen family are smaller than that of group-15 elements. This is due to increase in the effective nuclear charge from group-15 elements which result in greater attraction of the electrons from nucleus.
