A Buffer solution can be made by mixing CH3COOH and CH3COONa.
i) Write down equation for dissolution of both these substance in water.
ii) What will happen if we add small amount of HCl in to it.
i) CH3COOH(aq) = H+(aq) + CH3CO2-(aq)
CH3COONa(aq) --> Na+(aq) + CH3CO2-(aq)
ii) In water, HCl dissociates into H+ and Cl-. In this case, the first equilibrium will shift to the left. Protons (H+) will react with acetate ion producing acetic acid CH3COOH(aq) while Cl- inos will be in equilibrium with Na+.
