Five grams of compound A is dissolved in 90 mL of water. The distribution ratio for compound A between chloroform and water is 15. How much of compound A will be in chloroform if you extract it from water once with 90 mL of chloroform?
Distribution coefficient = solubility in organic phase / solubility in aqueous phase
Solubility in water = 5 / 90 = 0.056 g/ml
Solubility in organic phase = Distribution coefficient x solubility in aqueous phase = 15 x 0.056 = 0.84 g/ml
Mass of compound A in chloroform = 0.84 x 90 = 75.6 g
