Write the dissociation reactions of the following substances.
a) MgCl2
b)KF
c)BaNO3
Solution:
a) Magnesium cloride (MgCl2) is highly soluble in water.
In water it dissociates to ions: magnesium ion (Mg2+) and two cloride ions (Cl-).
MgCl2(aq) → Mg2+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq)
b) Potassium fluoride (KF) is highly soluble in water.
In water it dissociates to ions: potassium ion (K+) and fluoride ion (F-).
KF(aq) → K+(aq) + F-(aq)
c) Barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2) is highly soluble in water.
In water it dissociates to ions: barium ion (Ba2+) and two nitrate ions (NO3-).
Ba(NO3)2(aq) → Ba2+(aq) + 2NO3-(aq)
