Why are the liquids, carbons tetrachloride and water, immiscible? Why, then are the liquids, ethyl alcohol and water, miscible in all proportions?
Carbon tetrachloride is a nonpolar compound that does not form hydrogen or ionic interactions with water molecules. As a result, this compound is immiscible with water. In contrast, ethyl alcohol is a polar compound that interacts with water molecules via hydroxyl groups.
