Thienamycin inhibits the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. The drug binds and inhibits the activity of the penicillin-binding protein involved in the elongation of the peptidoglycan. Thienamycin consists of a beta-lactam ring that is a part of a carbapenem nucleus. It has a double bond that leads to high ring strain and lacks an acylamino side chain.
