Amino acids can be classified based on their structure and biochemical properties. The most common classification of amino acids divides them into classes according to the nature of the side groups:
- Non-polar aromatic (i.e., phenilalanine)
- Non-polar aliphatic (i.e., leucine)
- Cyclic (proline)
- Polar unchanged (i.e., glutamine)
- Hydroxyl-containing (i.e., serine)
- Sulfur-containing (i.e., cysteine)
- Basic (i.e., arginine)
- Acidic (i.e., glutamate)
