In season 6 of CSI NY, episode "Lat 40 47' N/ Long 73 58' W", Sheldon Hawks was processing a compass which had an engraving in the back of it scratched off. To reveal the message he:
-hooked it up to a small electric machine, with two wires that resembled that of jump wires for a car
-Poured a clear liquid over the compass
-turned on the electric machine
-put a white powder on the compass
Then, a chemical reaction occured where the liquid fizzed up and revealed the message on the brass-like compass.
What was the clear liquid and what was the powder called?
