(1) Draw the Lewis dot structures of the following gases:
(a) O3
(b) ClF3
+
(c) N2
(d) NO2
(e) NH3
(f) CO2
Predict values of Cp,m for each, assuming (a) no contribution from vibrational degrees
of freedom and (b) full contributions from vibrational degrees of freedom. Compare
your answers to Table 2C.5. What conclusions can you draw for each?
So let's just start with the first one. I know the structure of ozone so that's not the issue, the issue is the second part. In class I was basically taught that to find the Cpm, I'd need to add up the translational, rotational, and vibration degrees of freedom. So (5/2)R for trans, (3/2)R for rotational since it's non-linear, and 3R for vibration (3(N)-6)R. So (5/2)RT+(3/2)RT+3RT =7RT... Am I on the right track or did I misunderstand my notes. My textbook gives me the Cpm of O3 as 39.20. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to compare the two numbers and what conclusions I'm supposed to draw from them.
