Answer to Question #315645 in Physical Chemistry for Libina k

Question #315645

Electron scattering by isolated atoms and molecules occurs in the gas phase. It plays a key role in plasma physics and chemistry and it's important for such applications as semiconductor physics.

Electron scattering experiment provides most accurate values of the sizes of atomic nuclei.

Estimate the rough energy of electron required for this.

Ans: ~250 MeV

Note: The electron must be treated as relativistic

Eb=ΔM*c2=[Z*m*P+(A−Z)*mn−m*(X)]c2;

X is a nucleas.

A is the number of nucleons (mass number).

Z is the number of protons (Atomic number).

ΔM is the mass defect.

Energy per nucleon: E = Eb/A.
