Most of the information about reaction mechanism comes from chemical kinetics. This chapter first summarizes some of the basic terms related to the kinetic study of chemical reactions, and discusses some examples of chemical reactions in solution, classified according to their reaction order. One of the important sets of parameters obtained from kinetic studies of chemical reactions are the activation parameters, which indicate the energetic requirements of the reaction. The chapter illustrates the power of chemical kinetics in probing reaction mechanism. There are many questions that must be answered before an experimental approach can be selected to obtain kinetic data
