In order for the reaction to work, we need to use two moleculeы of base per molecule of reactant (2 equivalents). Why do we need to use two equivalents of base?
Since for a base to abstract a proton it has to use 1 equivalent there and remaining one can be utilised to carry out the reaction(as one of the reactant) or to shift the equilibrium to the right side where it is deprotonated as according to le chatlier's principle depending on the type of reaction.
