(1) Catalysis (acid) breaks the carbon/oxygen linkage of the N-methylol groups, and a reaction takes place with the hydroxyl groups of thecellulose with the discharge of water. 

(2) Thermopassivation is measured by the difference between the discharge potential of thermopassivated and unpassivated positive plates. 

(3) Cross-linked polymers, such asthermosets and elastomers, behave completely different than their counterparts, thermoplastic polymers. In cross-linked systems, the mechanical behavior is also best reflected by the plot of the shear modulus versus temperature.
