Question #92862

What would the reaction between phenylacetylene and H2 ( in presence of a catalyst) yield? I want to know the product please

Expert's answer

Like in every reaction in organic chemistry products are very dependent on conditions of the reaction.

Here, three different products can be formed depending on catalyst and conditions:

Using Lindlar catalyst (Pd on CaCO3 poisoned with Pb) the main product will be styrene (1).

Normal Pd/C catalyst will lead to the main product 2 - ethylbenzene.

More severe Pt/C catalyst with increased pressure of H2 and temperature will result in the product 3 - ethylcyclohexane.

If catalyst and conditions are unknown, most likely ethylbenzene (2) will be formed as a main product.
