Question #74195

in an IR explanation of cyclohexanol there are CH2 groups in the ring and that in the IR spectrum was at about v= 1454cm-1 so how will I say that will I say a sharp, medium band at v=1454cm-1 which illustrates v(C-H) bend of the CH2 groups of cyclohexanol or a sharp, medium band at v=1454cm-1 which illustrates v(CH2) bend of cyclohexanol?

Expert's answer

The two primary modes of vibration are stretching and bending

Stretching modes are typically of higher energy than bending modes

Stretching modes are often divided into two a symmetric and asymmetric stretch; the asymmetric stretch is usually of higher energy

CH2 bending modes at 1465 cm-1

In case of cyclohexanol CH2 group show sharp medium bending mode of vibration. Cyclohexanol is cyclic system it show a bending sharp medium band at 1454 cm1454~\mathrm{cm}^{\wedge} . In simple alkane bending at 1465 Cm\mathrm{Cm}^{\wedge} but in cyclic strain system frequency of band decrease it show at 1454 Cm1454~\mathrm{Cm}^{\wedge} .
