For example, we can use activated carbon when gas C is hydrogen disulfide H₂S. There are other methods for removing H₂S. We can use chemical reaction for this purpose:

$$\mathrm{Ag}^{+}(\mathrm{solv}) + \mathrm{H}_{2}\mathrm{S}(\mathrm{g}) = \mathrm{Ag}_{2}\mathrm{S}(\mathrm{s}) + 2\mathrm{H}^{+}(\mathrm{solv})$$

$\mathrm{Ag}^{+}$ is the activator degas here.

Sometimes activator degas is used when we need to remove gas before reaction. It is important for reactions when the presence of Oxygen is unwanted (e.g. reactions with alkyllithium compounds). For reducing of Oxygen we can use degas activators like sulfites ($\mathrm{Na}_{2}\mathrm{SO}_{3}, (\mathrm{NH}_{4})_{2}\mathrm{SO}_{3}$).
