Primary Amines: The amine is primary amine when an alkyl or Aryl group replaces one of three hydrogen atoms.


Aromatic amines react with nitrous acid (prepared in situ from NaNO2 and a mineral acid such as HCl) at 273 - 278 K to form stable aromatic diazonium salts i.e., NaCl and H2O.

If any of the alpha carbons in an amine are aromatic, the amine is considered aromatic. Thus, N-methylaniline is a secondary aromatic amine. Recall from the last column (1) that organic nitrogen atoms form somewhat polar N-H bonds, and that these functional groups can form hydrogen bonds.
