Stripping off one hydrogen atom on the alpha carbon of the alcohol ,and another hydrogen atom on the oxygen of the hydroxyl group, you get the aldehyde;


by further stripping off the hydrogen atom on the carbonyl carbon of the aldehyde, and shove an oxygen atom onto it, and then protonate the oxygen atom, you get the acid.
