Butene undergoes combustion in air to give carbon dioxide and water. This is a general reaction of all hydrocarbons which usually yields carbon dioxide and water for complete combustion. However, incomplete combustion can lead to the generation of carbon monoxide or even a black deposit of carbon.

The equation of combustion is given below.

C4H8 + 6O2----> 4CO2 + 4H2O

Being an unsaturated hydrocarbon (an alkene), butene burns with a sooty flame.
