using stereoisomers explain how the nature of a chemicals pharmacological activity is governed by its chemical properties of structure?
Omeprazole is an antiulcer drug. Once in the stomach, the molecule rearranges, which is then able to inhibit the enzyme responsible for the production of hydrochloric acid. This rearrangement is possible only for the S-stereoisomer of omeprazole. Therefore, only the S-stereoisomer of omeprazole will have pharmacological activity.
