Carboxylic acids are organic compounds that contain carboxyl group -COOH.

Reactions as acids. Carboxylic acids react with bases and salts. Examples:

RCOOH + NaHCO3 = RCOONa + H2O + CO2

2RCOOH + Ca(OH)2 = (RCOO)2Ca + 2H2O

Addition-elimination reaction to form esters:

RCOOH + R'OH = RCOOR' + H2O
