Solve for one major organic product given the following combination of reactants (substrate+reagents)
Substrate: C7H12
Reagent: H2/Pt
The molecular formula C7H12 indicates two degrees of unsaturation.
If the compound is heptane
When this reacts with Hydrogen (H2) in the presence of the catalyst Platinum, the degree of unsaturation decreases to one.
"C_7H_{12} + H_2 \\quad _\\longrightarrow^{Pt} \\quad C_7H_{14}"
Therefore, the alkyne (pentyne) becomes an alkene (pentene)
However the compound C7H12 could be cycloheptene, in this case cycloheptane (C7H14) is formed.
The structure of the reactant cannot be known unless there is further hydrogenation.
