The molecular formula C7H12 indicates two degrees of unsaturation.


If the compound is heptane

When this reacts with Hydrogen (H2) in the presence of the catalyst Platinum, the degree of unsaturation decreases to one.


"C_7H_{12} + H_2 \\quad _\\longrightarrow^{Pt} \\quad C_7H_{14}"


Therefore, the alkyne (pentyne) becomes an alkene (pentene)


However the compound C7H12 could be cycloheptene, in this case cycloheptane (C7H14) is formed.


The structure of the reactant cannot be known unless there is further hydrogenation.
