Because Calcium (Ca) has an oxidation number of +2.


Calcium needs two electrons to be stable but a Chlorine atom can only give out one electron.

Therefore, for Calcium to be stable, 2 chlorine atoms will give an electron each to Calcium


In order words, balanced and stable Calcium chloride has one atom of Ca and 2 atoms of Cl, forming 1Ca + 2Cl -- CaCl"_2"
