Why in the alkene hydrogenation get a syn addtion?

In case of alkene hydrogenation reaction is metal catalysed , first of all hydrogen bind to metal surface after that alkene approach hydrogen and bind simultaneously on both end , because of that syn addition take place

CH2=CH2 + H2 "\\to" CH3-CH3
