Potassium permanganate (KMnO4), chromic acid (H2CrO4), dichromate ions "Cr_2O_7^{2-}" are very strong oxidants able to react with many functional groups, such as primary, secondary alcohols, 1,2-diols. Under controlled conditions, KMnO4, H2CrO4 oxidize primary alcohols to carboxylic acids very efficiently.
