Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄), chromic acid (H2CrO4), dichromate ions $Cr_2O_7^{2-}$ are very strong oxidants able to react with many functional groups, such as primary, secondary alcohols, 1,2-diols. Under controlled conditions, KMnO_4, H2CrO4 oxidize primary alcohols to carboxylic acids very efficiently.
