A hydrogen bond is a form of association between an electronegative atom and the hydrogen atom H covalently bonded to another electronegative atom. N, O, or F can act as electronegative atoms.
Intramolecular hydrogen bonds are formed between hydrogen and an electronegative element inside the molecule, for example, acetylacetone. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds are formed between hydrogen of one molecule and the electronegative element of another molecule, for example, water and ammonia.
