Acidity is the ability of compound to lose hydrogen ion H+, leaving an anion behind. Acidity depends on the stability of the anion formed. The most acidic organic compound are acids, then are alcohols (phenols and aliphatic alcohols), then hydrocarbons – alkynes, alkenes and alkanes. Basicity of compound depends on its electron pairs that can form bonds with hydrogen ion. So, number of lone pairs and hybridization in compound effect on its basicity. Thus, alcohols are more basic than carboxylic acids. In order to find basicity or acidity of the compound you should know the structure of the compound, determine hybridization in it and write down the reaction with this compound and look at this equation: does this compound lose proton or gain it.
