Expert's answer

Answer on Question #45395 – Chemistry – Inorganic Chemistry

Question

The ionization energy of alkaline earth metals __________ on moving down the group?

Answer

The ionization energy of alkaline earth metals decreases on moving down the group? It is because of increasing of the atomic radii.

By definition, ionization energy of an atom is the minimum amount of energy required to remove an electron from the atom. The greater the atomic radius, the greater the distance from the outermost electron to the nucleus is. So, the greater the distance from the outermost electron to the nucleus, the weaker the electrostatic attraction force between them is, and, thus, the easier the outermost electron can be removed.
