Question #27801

how to find in a solution that which component is solute and which component is solvent ...................e.g ......... solution made from 200g h20 and 222g of ethylene glycol

Expert's answer

How to find in a solution that which component is solute and which component is solvent?

E.g.: solution made from 200g of H₂O and 222g of ethylene glycol.

Answer: Component, which has a biggest mass concentration in the liquid mixture, is called the solvent. But, when two or more components have big enough and close to each other values of mass concentrations, then usually water is accepted as the solvent. And if there is no water in the mixture, then the liquid which is chemically inert, and will not take part in further chemical reactions of the solution is accepted as the solvent.
