(a) Explain the trends in ionization and promotion energies of noble gases. Use chemical equations to discuss the observations that led to the synthesis of xenon compounds.
Noble gases are generally inert but as we move down the group of Noble gases, the number of occupied energy levels and therefore the atomic radius increases. This cause reduction in nuclear pull for electrons in the outermost energy levels and can easily form compounds with very electronegative elements such as Flourine.
The promotional energies of noble gases increase down the group as the shielded electrons of xenon and krypton require less energy to move to a higher energy level.
