Question #11367

a chemical compound having smell of chlorine used to remove yellowness of white cloths. name the compound with its chemical equation

Expert's answer

This is the solution of sodium hypochlorite NaClO (commonly known as bleach or
clorox).
Preparation:
Cl2 + 2NaOH = NaCl + NaClO + H2O
Sodium
hypochlorite is a strong oxidizer.
When NaClO dissolved in a solution of
water, it will slowly decompose, releasing chlorine, oxygen, and sodium
hydroxide:
4NaClO + 2H2O = 4NaOH + 2Cl2 + O2
