The bonds occurring between metals and non-metals on the periodic table are called ionic bonds. Since K is a metal and Br is a nonmetal, this is the case. In this bond one electron were transferred between the outer electron shells of adjacent atoms from K to Br. As a result, K becomes positively charged ion, whereas Br becomes negatively charged ion. The two ions would adhere (bond) to each other by the positive/negative attraction between the ions.
