It supports electric neutrality in the internal circuit that hinders the cell from rapidly running its reaction on the equilibrium. If there was not a salt bridge, solution in one half of cage accumulated a negative charge, and solution in other half of cell would accumulate a positive charge as the reaction proceeded, quickly preventing further reaction, and hence production of electricity.
