Valence electrons are the electrons on the outer shell of each atom. The number of valence electrons is directly related for groups 1-2 and 13-18 (group A). However, the number of valence electrons for the transition metals, which are group 3-12 (group B), is generally unrelated to group number. For group 1-2 and 13-18, the number of valence electrons is directly related to group number. So, elements in group one, the alkali metals, have one electron, those in group 13 have three valence electrons and so on.
