Batteries consist of electrochemical cells which store chemical energy for its later conversion to electrical energy. Electrochemical reaction consists of 2 half-cell reaction (oxidation-reduction) linked via a semi permeable membrane. Each part of the cell contains a metal which acts as an electrode. One of the electrodes is called cathode, another electrode – anode. The side of the cell containing cathode is reduced (it gains electrons) acting as an oxidizing agent for anode.
