a) 2C₂H₆(g) + 5O₂(g) = 4CO(g) + 6H₂O(g)
b) ΔH°rxn = 4ΔH°(CO) + 6ΔH°(H₂O) - 2ΔH°(C₂H₆) - 5ΔH°(O₂)
ΔH°rxn = 4ΔH°(CO) + 6ΔH°(H₂O) - 2ΔH°(C₂H₆) - 5ΔH°(O₂)
ΔH°rxn = 4 × (-110.5) + 6 × (-241.8) - 2 × (-84) - 5 × (0) = -1724.8 kJ
c) Burns incompletely 250×0.09 = 22.5 g of ethane, it corresponds to the amount of
M(C₂H₆) = 30.1 g/mol, n = 22.5/30.1 = 0.748 mol
2 mol of ethane make 1724.8 kJ of heat
0.748 mol of ethane make x kJ of heat
X = 0.748×1724.8/2 = 645.1 kJ
Burns completely 250-22.5 = 227.5 g of ethane, it corresponds to the amount of
M(C₂H₆) = 30.1 g/mol, n = 227.5/30.1 = 7.56 mol
For total combustion of ethane:
2C₂H₆(g) + 7O₂(g) = 4CO₂(g) + 6H₂O(g)
