A. Identify which between the two given molecules is a gas at room temperature
1. O2 and S
2. C2H8 and C5H12
B. Based on the intermolecular forces present, predict the relative boiling points of each of the substances below. Arrange each series of substances in order of increasing boiling point. State your reason for order you use. ( identify the forces and explain how they affect the boiling point.)
1. Dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3), ethanol(CH3CH2OH), and propane(CH3CH2CH3
2. Br2, Cl2, I2
3. F2, PCl3, OF2
A.
B.
"CH_3CH_2CH_3<CH_3-O-CH_3<CH_3CH_2OH"
Propane is non polar molecule whereas dimethylether is polar molecule and there exist dipole-dipole interaction and ethanol is also polar molecule with hydrogen bonding.
2 . All are haologen molecules and non polar. The increasing order of boiling point is
"Cl_2<Br_2<I_2" as size increases van der waal forces increases so boiling point increases.
3 . Increasing order boiling point is
"F_2<PCl_3<OF_2"
Fluorine molecule is non polar, in OF2 hydrogen bonding present.
