A type of coal analysis that focuses on the determination of volatilization characteristics of the coal.
Volatile matter ( VM) is the percentage loss in mass adjusted for moisture when coal is heated out of contact with air under standard conditions.
To determine volatile matter of coal, it is heated to a standard temperature and at a standard rate in a controlled environment.
Standard D-3175-07, which is used for nonsparking coal or coke, requires a 1-g sample ground to 250 µm.
The sample is heated in a furnace at 950 °C for seven minutes. For sparking coal or coke it is specified that the sample be gradually heated to 600 °C within six minutes and then put in a 950 °C furnace for six minutes. After this, the crucible containing the sample is removed and cooled for 15 minutes before it is weighed.
