Fe2O3(s) + 2Al(s) -----> 2Fe(s) +  Al2O3(s)


The magnesium ribbon ignites the thermite starter mixture, which in turn ignites the thermite mixture. In an extremely exothermic reaction, the aluminum reduces the iron in the ferric oxide.
