Answer to Question #256308 in General Chemistry for Kimmay17

Question #256308

The strength of a covalent bond depends upon the size of the atoms and the bond order. In general short bonds are strong bonds.

For each pair of covalently bonded atoms, choose the one expected to have the higher bond energy.

(A) C-N

(B) C≡N ...... (A,B) fill in the blank 1

C triple bond N has slightly higher bond energy than C-N. Carbon Nitrogen triple bond is smaller than Carbon Nitrogen single bond, hence has higher bond energy.

C=O has a higher bond energy than C-O. Since the double bond is shorter in length and has bond order of two in comparison to single bond which has a bond order of one. Hence C=O is stronger than C-O.
