Question #254437

a closed system contains nitrogen gas and liquid water mixed in a 3.5 L volume and is allowed to equilibrate at 40 degrees Celsius until the pressure becomes constant

a. what is the partial pressure of nitrogen gas if the total pressure is 780 torr and the water vapor partial pressure is 0.25 atm?/

b. the total pressure increased to 2.20 atm since oxygen gas was added. what will be the new partial pressure for nitrogen gas?

a) pressure to same units

1 torr = 0.0013159 atm

780 torr=?

(780 * 0.0013159)

=1.03atm

P N2+P H2O=1.03 atm

Since, P H2O=0.25atm ,P N2=(1.03-0.25)

partial pressure of nitrogen gas =0.78 atm

b)P1V1=P2V2

the molar masses of the two gases.

N2 =28.01g/mol

H2O =18.02 g/mol

O2 = 32.00g/mol

total pressure =(1.03+2.20)

=3.23 atm

the new partial pressure for nitrogen gas

the new partial pressure for nitrogen gas =1.16 atm
