When Graphite was heated in excess air, "CO_2" gas is produced. The gas react with aqueous calcium hydroxide to form a white precipitate.

"Ca(OH)_2 (aq)+CO_2(g) \\to CaCO_3(white \\space ppt)+H_2O(l)"

With excess "CO_2" the white precipitate turns colorless.

"CaCO_3+CO_2\\to Ca(HCO_3)_2(colorless \\space solution)"
