When Graphite was heated in excess air, CO2CO_2 gas is produced. The gas react with aqueous calcium hydroxide to form a white precipitate.

Ca(OH)2(aq)+CO2(g)CaCO3(white ppt)+H2O(l)Ca(OH)_2 (aq)+CO_2(g) \to CaCO_3(white \space ppt)+H_2O(l)

With excess CO2CO_2 the white precipitate turns colorless.

CaCO3+CO2Ca(HCO3)2(colorless solution)CaCO_3+CO_2\to Ca(HCO_3)_2(colorless \space solution)
