Answer to Question #227506 in General Chemistry for Murray

Question #227506

I have two formulas for making Silver Thiosulfate at 3 mM concentration.

I’m confused – not a Chemist at all... (Used for ethylene blocking in plant tissue)

Formula 1

(DeBacco University)

23.81 g   NaS2O3.5H2O (Sodium Thiosulphate)

2.04 g      AgNO3         (Silver Nitrate)

2 liters      distilled water

Dissolve NaS2O3.5H2O in 500 ml

Dissolve AgNO3 in 500 ml

Add AgNO3 to NaS2O3.5H2O solution.

Add 1liter, to get 3 mM

Formula 2

Sigma-Aldrich

1.58 g      NaS2O3.5H2O   (Sodium Thiosulphate)

1.7 g      AgNO3         (Silver Nitrate)

Dissolve NaS2O3.5H2O in 100 ml

Dissolve AgNO3 in 100 ml

Add 20ml AgNO3 to 80ml NaS2O3.5H2O solution = 100 ml of.02 M STS solution

Add to above 100ml, 557 ml water to get 3mM solution

Thanks
